As an English teacher, I try to adapt and alter my teaching and techniques to best suit my pupils and the topic - and where poetry is concerned I try to look for innovative and new ways to enthuse my classes.  I first used Spoz and his poetry workshops six years ago. The booking and running of the day were handled with ease and added no additional stress to my job. He was able to adapt the topic and focus to suit our curriculum and was keen to learn about the cohort he was working with to ensure that pupils were getting the most out of their experience. Bringing the subject of poetry 'to life' and adding a competitive element to the process engaged the year group and allowed for pupils to appreciate the writing and performing of pieces. It is clear that having a poetry slam in schools is very beneficial for the children: increasing fluency, vocabulary, and perhaps the most important, confidence.
An example of this, from 2016, when a selective mute, and a girl with anxiety found the bravery to speak in a microphone in front of the whole of the year group. After not speaking aloud to the class for the whole of the autumn term, these girls found their voices in the first week of the Spring term, and it really was an amazing moment for myself (as the class teacher) to witness. I am sure that this is due to the work done by SPOZ and his poetry to encourage the girls to be able to speak out. At the end of the day, the mood was evident to see - the smiles on the faces of the children, and the engagement levels was immense.
